Five counties that form the larger Western Kenya region will this year get the privilege of hosting a cultural event to boost tourism, dubbed the Mulembe Fiesta.
The three-day event will be hosted in the third week of December, according to Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and his Bungoma counterpart Kenneth Lusaka.
The two leaders revealed the plan when they met a delegation of representatives from the five counties in Kakamega.
“Every county out of the five will have their events and then we will have three days of the mega event here in Kakamega. We will also have a football match on the final day,” Barasa said.
Governor Lusaka lauded the event as an opportunity to boost the region’s economy and culture.
“We have agreed on a roadmap because we have a lot of talent, we will market some of these local products and they will even find themselves on the shelves of supermarkets and being sold internationally,” Lusaka said.
The final events will be held in Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Trans Nzoia and Vihiga counties.
Kenya Utalii College chairperson expressed his excitement about the initiative during the meeting in Kakamega.
“We will invite our famous musicians in Western who will perform and there will be a food fiesta to showcase delicacies known in Western for example mukombero and locally prepared mushrooms,” he said.
Tourist attraction sites in the five counties, including Crying Stone (Kakamega), Nabuyole Falls (Bungoma), Maragoli Hills (Vihiga), Samia Hills (Busia), and Kitale Museum (Trans Nzoia), will be made accessible to residents.
As part of the preparations, technical committees will be set up in the five counties.
