In a devastating turn of events, Baharini Village in Munyuki Location, Lugari Sub-County, Kakamega County, was rocked by tragedy on Tuesday.
Michael Musungu Mulongo, a resident of Lumama village in Lugari Sub-County, met his demise while undertaking sand harvesting activities along the riverbank.
According to eyewitnesses, Mulongo was diligently excavating sand at the stream’s edge when the ground suddenly gave way, burying him alive under a cascade of earth. Despite frantic efforts to rescue him, the suffocation proved fatal.
The landowner, Ruth Wanjala, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, revealing that this wasn’t the first time such a tragedy had occurred on her property.
Shockingly, two previous incidents narrowly avoided claiming lives, yet warnings against the perilous practice seemed to fall on deaf ears.
Despite repeated admonitions and attempts to halt sand harvesting in the area, Mrs. Wanjala lamented the persistent defiance of safety precautions by local residents.
She recounted how her husband faced hostility when attempting to deter the hazardous activity, highlighting the urgent need for intervention to prevent further loss of life.
