A pupil who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2022 at Webuye D.E.B. Primary in Bungoma County has failed to join Form One after her school withheld her KCPE results slip.
Sharon Vilindi, a girl from a humble background from Webuye, scored 299 marks and had secured a Form One chance at Namirama Girls High School.
The teenager, who stays with her grandmother, told the Western Kenya Times she owed her previous primary school Sh10,000, which her grandmother cannot raise.
“I hoped to get more marks, but I had a hard time with my evening studies as it forced me to go out and study using the security lights of our neighbor’s home,” she said as tears rolled down her cheeks.
Magaret Wanyonyi, Sharon’s grandmother, said they are housed by a well-wisher, and their daily bread is provided by donations from neighbors and other well-wishers.
“I am appealing to well-wishers to assist me in getting my grandchild’s results slip from the school,” she pleaded.
She added that the school has even denied issuing a photocopy of the results slip, rendering them hopeless.
“We wanted to use the slip to apply for bursaries and scholarships, but the school insisted that we clear the fee arrears first,” she added.
Contacted for comments, the Webuye D.E.B. headteacher, Mr. Alfred Simiyu, confirmed that the pupil had fee arrears that must be cleared first before her results slip is given.
