A third-year student at Maseno University was gunned down by police on Monday during anti-government protests by supporters of the Azimio coalition in Kisumu.
Police said the deceased student, William Mayange, was among protesters who invaded a supermarket after the demonstrations turned violent.
Mayange was shot in the neck and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Coptic Hospital.
The students had overpowered the security officers, who had finished all the teargas on containing the riot, and the student was then shot when police began firing live bullets to prevent rioters from looting the supermarket.
Six police officers were injured in the melee, in which students lit bonfires and barricaded the Kisumu-Busia highway while hurling stones at police.
Kisumu County Governor Anyang Nyon’go released a press statement condemning police for using unnecessary force against students demonstrating peacefully.
“As we sent condolence messages to the family of the slain student and the Maseno University fraternity, we demand that the police officer who fired the killer bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible,” the last paragraph of the statement.
